Abstract

A composition for application to slabs, billets and other articles of metal such as tools which are to undergo heat treatment comprises ferrosilicon, a finely divided refractory material and a fusible glass-forming material. Oxidation and decarburization are thereby reduced. The refractory may be alumina, magnesia, silica or a silicate; the fusible material may be powdered glass or a mixture of silicates, borates or phosphates with iron oxide or lead oxide. The composition may also contain aluminium and an oxidizing agent such as a nitrate or chlorate, iron oxide or manganese dioxide; if these are present a fluoride is also preferably added. The mixture may be suspended in water or an organic solvent with an alkyl ammonium montmorillonite as a dispersing agent. A resinous adhesive may also be included.
