Abstract

An aqueous coating composition for application to ferrous metals comprises aluminium or aluminium-alloy particles in a water vehicle with an inhibitor for preventing reaction between the aluminium and the water which consists of a fritted ground alkaline earth borate or alkali-alkaline earth borate. The inhibitor may also comprise silicon oxide and aluminium fluoride. By "fritted" is meant melted and cooled. The composition may also contain alumina or zirconia, and a suspending agent, e.g. clay. Examples are given of preparing the inhibitor by melting together (1) barium oxide (or carbonate), boron oxide (or boric acid) and aluminium fluoride, and (2) sodium oxide (or carbonate), barium oxide (or carbonate), boron oxide (or boric acid) and silicon oxide (silica).
