Abstract

1344983 Vitreous enamelling BORAX CONSOLIDATED Ltd 19 Jan 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 6802/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division C7] Metallic surfaces, e.g. of steel maintained at a temperature of at least 750‹ C. are treated with a mixture comprising (1) a boron compound which is boric oxide, boric acid, an alkali or alkaline earth metal borate or a boron containing mineral, (2) a metal selected from Cu, Zn, Al, Ni, Cd, Cr, Pb, Sn, Mg and Mn, or an oxide thereof or a compound generating an oxide of the metal under the process conditions, and (3) a reducing agent, e.g. C or Si. The process produces a coating of metal on the metallic surface, this coating being covered by a layer of vitreous glaze which is readily removable. The mixture may be applied to the metallic surface suspended in a stream of inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, in the form of an atomized aqueous suspension, or in the form of a powder.
