Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain ingots of less nonmetallic inclusions while preventing nozzle clogging effectively in continuous casting of steel by forming powder for covering the surface of molten metal to a compsn. wherein the component of SiO2 is suppressed. CONSTITUTION:Powder for coating the surface of molten metal contains 40- 60% CaO, 20-40% Al2O3, 0.5-5.0% MgO, 0.5-5.0% C, 0.1-5.0% Na2O, 1- 10% CaF2 and the SiO2 therein is regulated to <=7.0%. The CaO and Al2O3 are the essential components of the powder, and if these are compounded within the above-described range, characteristics such as non-metallic inclusion adsorbing power, viscosity, softening temp., basicity, and the like necessary for the power are provided. It is preferable that the SiO2 is as little as possible, and the increase of Al2O3 in the molten steel by the reaction of the Al in the molten steel and the SiO2 in the powder is prevented.
