Abstract

[Also in Division C7] Surface oxidation of metal articles during heat-treatment is reduced or inhibited by applying to the metal surface a composition carried in a liquid medium and comprising (a) boron trioxide or a material which will yield boron trioxide at the heat-treatment temperature, eg. boric acid, and (b) up to 15% by weight of a mixture of polyvinyl acetate and bentonite. The liquid medium may be water or an alcohol. The composition may also comprise alumina; silica, e.g. as silica flour, powdered glass or a silicate frit; a ceramic frit; a suspension agent, e.g. a montmorillonite gel; an adhesive, e.g. a gum or resin; and thickening or thinning agents. After heating, the compositions may be removed from the metal surface by spraying water thereon, or they may act as a lubricant during subsequent hot working. The compositions may also be used during annealing or tempering operations, or in carburising to mask parts of workpieces which are not to be carburised.
