Abstract
To reduce the scale formed on a ferrous surface during a heat-treatment at a temperature between 800 DEG and 1650 DEG F., the surface is treated with an aqueous preparation containing at least 0.1% by weight of boric acid or phosphate anion. A wetting agent which may be anionic, cationic, or non-ionic may be added. The surface is subsequently acid pickled.
