Abstract

Disclosed is a method and composition useful for applying a phosphate coating to an iron or steel surface. The surface is contacted with an aqueous solution containing acidic zinc phosphate, chlorate ion and between 0.1 and 10 mg/1 vanadium, calculated as V2O5, at a temperature of less than 65 DEG C.
