Abstract

Formation of a phosphate coating on metal surfaces (iron, steel, zinc) can be effected at lower temps. (40 - 55 degrees C) than in the conventional process (70 degrees C) by using a soln. in which the wt. ratio of the components is P2O5 : Zn : ClO3 : NO3 = 1 : (0.2 - 0.7) : (0.2 - 0.7) : (0.1 - 0.4). pref. 1 : (0.3 - 0.6) : (0.3 - 0.4) : (0.15 - 0.25). The ratio of total acids to free acids in (8 - 25):1 pref. (12 - 20) : 1. The process is esp. suitable for forming undercoats on car bodies for subsequent lacquering.
