Abstract

1363627 Coated steel BRITISH LEYLAND TRUCK & BUS DIVISION Ltd 20 Oct 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 52702/70 Heading B2E An anti-corrosion treatment process comprises the steps of (a) galvanising a steel member to give the member a zinc coating, (b) treating the galvanised steel member with a phosphate solution to create a coating of zinc phosphate on the zinc coating, and (c) applying a powder coating to the zinc phosphate coating. The steel member may be galvanised either by hot-dip galvanising or electro-galvanising. The posphating step may be carried out in a phosphate plant which consists of a first water rinse, a second water rinse, a zinc phosphate treatment, a third water rinse, a chromate rinse and finally a drying oven. The powder coating may comprise an epoxy powder which is then stoved at 150-200‹C., or an acrylic or alkyd resin and may be applied electrostatically or by a fluidised bed process. The steel member may be fabricated steel sub-assemblies and rivets which are used to construct ex service vehicle bodies. The zinc coated member may be treated with a protective resin or lanolin compound to enable it to be transported and stored, the protective resin or lanolin compound being removed prior to the phosphating stage. After the protective coating is removed the member may be de-greased in a trichloroethylene vapour degreaser. A conventional bituminous underseal may be applied to those sub-assemblies which form part of the understructure of the vehicle body and those sub-assemblies which include box-sections can also be sprayed with an oil-resin mixture.
