Abstract
1,165,805. Electrolytically and electrophoretically producing coatings on steel strip. FUJI IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. Jan. 26, 1967 [Jan. 26, 1966], No. 4035/67. Heading C7B. Steel strip is cathodically coated with Cr and/or chromate in an electrolyte containing predominantly chromic acid (calculated as CrO 3 ) and is subsequently electro-phoretically lacquered by immersing it while connected anodically in an aqueous electro-phoretic lacquering disperson, the resultant lacquered strip thereafter being withdrawn substantially vertically from the dispersion and dried, baked and cooled during the vertical withdrawal. The cathodic treatment may be in an electrolyte comprising chromic acid and H 2 SO 4 . The lacquer coating materials may be epoxy-based, acrylic-based, phenolbased or alkyl-based. The coated strip may be used for the production of food cans, crown caps and canisters of other types. Fig. 3 shows a strip treating line where cold rolled steel strip passes through an electrolytic cleaner 4, washer 5, pickling tank 6, washer 7, brushing and washing system 8, two compartmented cathodic treatment tank 9, containing the chromic acid electrolyte, washer 10 and electro-phoretic lacquering tank 11. Finally, the coated strip passes vertically out of the tank, passes an air knife 12 by means of which surplus solution is pushed downwards and then passes through a drying and curing furnace 13 and a forced air cooler 14.
