Abstract

223,994. Bengough, G. D., and Stuart, J. M. Aug. 2, 1923. Non-metallic substances, obtaining; repairing surfaces; treatment after electrolysis. - Aluminium or an aluminium alloy is provided with a resistant coating by anodic treatment in a bath containing chromic acid or a substance producing chromic acid at the anode. In the case of " duralumin " or commercial sheet aluminium the object is first washed in a solvent for grease, then in hot water; it is then made the anode in a bath containing 3 per cent chromic anhydride, free from sulphuric acid and sulphates. The cathode may be of carbon. The connections should be such that no metal other than that to be treated dips into the bath. If necessary the metal may be partially immersed and treated and then reversed. The temperature should be at least 40‹ C. The voltage should be raised gradually during 15 minutes to 40 volts, kept at this value for 35 minutes, then raised to 50 volts during 5 minutes, and kept at this value for 5 minutes. The object is then washed and dried. It may then be treated with lanoline in solution or as an emulsion or may be oiled or painted.
