Abstract
Tinplate food containers are treated to remove surface impurities from the tinplate by anodic treatment followed by cathodic treatment. It may then be provided with a protective film by a final anodic treatment or it may be coated with lacquer by a roller, by spraying, or by electrodeposition. The preliminary treatment may be effected in ammonia or ammonium carbonate with high current density and vigorous evolution of gas; anodic oxidation may be effected in the same electrolyte but with lower current density. Anodic oxidation may also be effected in a solution of sodium or potassium dihydrogen phosphate or monohydrogen phosphate or a neutral mixture of dihydrogen and monohydrogen phosphates. Lacquer may be electrodeposited from an alkaline emulsion over an anodic oxide coating. The operations may be applied to the treatment of the tinplate food containers, particularly the inside thereof in rapid sequence. Specification 479,746 is referred to. Specification 455,810, [Group XXXVI], also is referred to in the Provisional Specifications.
