Abstract
1328234 Electrolytically applying nickel to steel HENKEL & CIE GmbH 9 Sept 1970 [10 Sept 1969] 43057/70 Heading C7B [Also in Division C1] In a process for the electrolytic application of nickel coatings to degreased and pickled steel surfaces and thereafter applying inorganic enamel by direct white enamelling, the nickel is electrolytically applied by treating the steel for less than 15 seconds with a solution which contains a water-soluble nickel salt (such as nickel sulphate and/or chloride) and 10 to 60 mg/l of a non-ionic wetting agent at a current density of from 1 to 10 A/dm<SP>2</SP> and at a temperature of 45 to 70‹C. The wetting agent has a turbidity point below the treatment temperature and is such that its solubility increases as temperature is lowered. During the electrolysis, in order to obtain a uniform nickel layer, at least part of the solution is continuously or periodically removed from the process, cooled to below the turbidity point, (optionally filtered), reheated to the treatment temperature and returned to the process. The solution may contain lustring or levelling substances (unspecified) and also H 3 BO 3 for regulating the pH to 3-5. For the non-ionic wetting agent, various ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide reaction products are specified. In the Examples the nickel-plated steel is passivated with sodium phosphate solution before being direct-white-enamelled.
