Abstract

1398589 Treating anodized aluminium HENKEL & CIE GmbH 15 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 57913/72 Heading C7B A surface of Al or an Al alloy (e.g. with Mg and/or Si) is anodically oxidized and the oxidized surface consolidated in a solution containing from 0.0005 to 0.05 g/l of citric, tartaric, gallic or saccharic acid or an equivalent amount of a water soluble salt of the acid (e.g. an alkali metal, ammonium or alkaline earth metal salt), the solution temperature being between 90‹C and the boiling point and the pH being from 5 to 6. The pH may be adjusted to this range using ammonia or acetic acid. The solution may also contain Ni or Co acetate. For example, Al alloy is degreased with alkali, pickled, anodically oxidized using either a direct current H 2 SO 4 process or a process which produces colouring (e.g. using a solution of sulphophthalic or sulphanilic acid), and then the oxide is consolidated.
