Abstract

1401067 Colouring anodized aluminium; electro-phoretic deposition DAINICHISEIKA COLOR & CHEMICALS MFg CO Ltd 5 Dec 1972 [24 Dec 1971] 56095/72 Heading C7B Aluminium and aluminium alloys (e.g. containing Cu, Si, Fe, Mn, Mg, Zn, Cr, Ti, Pb, Ni or B) are coloured by anodizing at a voltage sufficiently low to avoid sparking at the aluminium or alloy surface in an aqueous electrolyte containing a phosphorus oxide acid, and contacting the resultant porous oxide coating with an aqueous dispersion of pigment to absorb the pigment into the porous' coating, e.g. by dipping, spraying or with electrophoretic deposition. The anodizing bath may also contain sulphuric, chromic, boric, oxalic, sulphamic, malonic, sulphosalicylic, maleic, citric, tartaric, phthalic, benzene-sulphonic, succinic or lactic acid; or anodizing may be carried out first in the phosphorus oxide acid bath and thereafter in a bath containing one of the above acids. The mixed acid bath may include a metal salt, e.g. aluminium sulphate. Various pigments are listed as suitable for use in the aqueous dispersion, in which a dispersing agent, e.g. a polyethylene glycol, alkylamide, polyalcohol or aliphatic acid ester, a colloid forming agent, e.g. an alkoxy ethanol or polyvinylalcohol, or an organic compound such as a ketone e.g. acetone, a diol, e.g. ethylene glycocol, or a triol, e.g. glycerine. The anodic film may be sealed using steam, hot water, nickel acetate, potassium bichromate or sodium silicate.
