Abstract

267,080. Metals Protection Corporation, (Assignees of Pierce, H. C.). March 5, 1926, [Convention date]. Chromiuin, depositing; metals, pickling.-Iron, steel or nickel articles are anodically treated in the plating or another bath before electroplating with chromium. In an example, the article is cleaned in an alkaline bath, preferably while connected as a cathode, in order to remove oxides. It is then mixed in cold water and suspended by an iron wire in a chromium plating bath of ordinary composition. It is first connected as anode, the current being regulated so as to cause slight gassing; the current is reversed after a suitable period. The article may also be connected alternately as cathode and as anode during the preliminary treatment; in this case the last anodic treatment should be sufficiently long to remove the previous deposit. The current density in the final plating may be 40-200 amps. per sq. ft. When the articles to be coloured by buffing after plating, the current density should be lowered to the minimum value shortly before completion.
