Abstract

568,161. Electrodepositing chromium. PEACH, A. L. Sept. 14, 1943, No. 15031.. [Class 41] [Also in Group II] High-speed tool steels and other basis metals are given a hard wear-resisting, firmly-adherent, surface by depositing thereon an inner layer of soft chromium and then an outer layer of hard chromium ; or, if a wear-resistant surface is not essential, a further deposit of soft chromium may be applied and may be followed by another of hard chromium. The cleaned basis metal is first immersed in the "soft" bath for five minutes before current is passed, a current of 300 amps. /ft.<2> then being passed for 30 minutes at a temperature of 30-90‹ C., and preferably at 50‹ C. The article is then rinsed in water at 50‹ C. and treated in the '' hard " bath at 52‹ C. and 200 amps. density. The " hard " bath comprises 250 grams of pure chromic acid (Cr03) per litre and 2.5 grams of sulphuric acid. The " soft " bath additionally contains 15-42 grams of ferrous hydroxide or carbonate, 20 grams being the preferred figure, or 15-30 grams of nickel hydroxide or carbonate or aluminium hydroxide. Specification 566,218 is referred to. The Provisional Specification sets out temperatures of 70‹ and 50‹ C. for the '' soft and " hard baths, respectively, and gives the following ingredients for a tool-steel alloy : 12-22 per cent tungsten, 2-6 per cent chromium, 0.3-0.5 per cent vanadium, and traces of cobalt.
