Abstract

584,977. Electrodeposition of nickel and nickel alloys. LONDON & SCANDINAVIAN METALLURGICAL CO., Ltd., SPIRO, P., and WOHLGEMUTH, F. Sept. 29, 1944, No. 18720. [Class 41] Nickel or a nickel alloy is deposited from a bath containing a fluoride and cobalt with the addition of an organic hardener having a sodium naphthalene trisulphonate base and a wetting agent consisting of a sulphonated aliphatic alcohol containing sodium sulphate. The deposit may contain an appreciable quantity of cobalt or a trace only according to conditions. Cadmium may be added to the bath to give a deposit not subject to embrittlement by heat treatment. A suitable basic bath constitution is nickel sulphate 220-340, cobalt sulphate 6.28-22, boric acid 25.2-37.7, sodium fluoride 6.28-15.7, sodium chloride 1.57-12.56 gms. per litre of solution. Cadmium oxide may be added in the proportion 0.044-0.22 gms. per litre of solution. The constituents are dissolved and the solution oxidized by means of potassium permanganate or otherwise to remove organic contaminants and filtered. There are then added 1-5 gms. per litre of 1-3-6 sodium napthalene trisulphonate and 1-3 gms. of the wetting agent known as "Claytavon W.M." (containing ¢-1¢ gm.s. of sulphonated aliphatic alcohol) per litre. Deposition may be effected on non- conducting bodies provided with a conductive layer.
