Abstract

277,295. Metals Protection Corporation, (Assignees of Humphries, C. H.). Sept. 9, 1926, [Convention date]. Chromium, depositing.-Iron, steel, or other metal is plated with chromium at a temperature e.g. 20‹ C at which the current efficiency is high, the deposit having a dull finish; it is then further plated at a higher temperature e.g. 40‹ C. so as to obtain a bright finish. The second coating may be thin; a '' satin " finish is thereby produced. Both platings may take place in the same electrolyte. The electrolyte may consist of a solution of chromic acid together with small amounts of hydrated chromic hydroxide and ammonium sulphate. The current density for the first plating is 25 amps. per sq. ft.
