Abstract
367,587. Electrodeposition of palladium. POWELL, A. R., DAVIES, E. C., and JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., 78, Hatton Garden, London. March 12, 1931, No. 7601. [Class 41.] Palladium is deposited as a bright adherent plating from a solution of a palladosammine compound the acid group of which is not reduced under the plating conditions, such as palladosammine sulphate, nitrate, or phosphate. A conducting salt and a small quantity of an acid such as sulphuric, nitric, or phosphoric acids or of an alkali are preferably added to the bath. A suitable bath is made by dissolving 30 gms. of palladosammine nitrate in 1 litre of warm water to which is then added 50 gms. of sodium sulphate or nitrate together with 10 gms. of phosphoric acid or 10 c.c. of strong ammonia solution. A small quantity, e.g. 0À01 per cent, of a colloid such as dextrin, glue, or a vegetable gum may be added to refine the grain size and improve the brightness of the deposit. The plating temperature should be above 40 C. preferably 65-80 C. A current density of 3-25 amps. per square foot at 1À5 volts, or higher may be used. The bath is regenerated when the palladium content has fallen below 0À5 per cent.
