Abstract
367,588. Electrodeposition of platinum, palladium, rhodium, and their alloys. POWELL, A. R., DAVIES, E. C., and JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., 78, Hatton Garden, London. March 12, 1931, No. 7603. [Class 41.] The metals are deposited from solutions of their double nitrites with sodium or any other metal which forms a stable and soluble double salt and is not itself deposited. The preferred bath contains 1-1À5 per cent of the platinum group metal as double sodium nitrite. The bath may be neutral but is preferably slightly acidified with about 5 per cent of phosphoric acid, or with sulphuric, oxalic, or other acid which is not decomposed by the current. The throwing power may be improved by addition of a conducting salt such as sodium sulphate. Alloys of the metals with one another in any desired proportion may be deposited from a mixture of their double nitrites, e.g. a mixture of sodium platinonitrite and sodium rhodonitrite. The baths are operated above 40‹ C., preferably at 65-80‹ C.
