Abstract

349,842. Electrolysis. ALUMINIUMINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., Neuhausen, Switzerland. July 30, 1930, No. 22997. Convention date, Aug. 24, 1929. [Class 41.] Alloys, depositing; metals, pickling. - Metal articles are electroplated with aluminium containing a small quantity of a metal which is negative to aluminium in the electrochemical series, a fused bath of an electrolyte having a lower melting point than aluminium being employed. A suitable electrolyte consists of 1 part of sodium chloride to 3 parts of aluminium chloride. The anode may be of crude aluminium or of an aluminium alloy; impurities such as iron, carbon and silicon remain in the anode. The additional metal to be deposited may be introduced into the electrolyte as a compound or by means of auxiliary anodes. In the case of lead some tenths of one per cent in the deposit are sufficient. The current density is preferably less than 9À3 amps per sq. ft. The article to be plated should be cleaned by brushing and etching and connected for a short time as anode before plating. Specifications 280,881 and 299,689, [both in Class 41, Electrolysis], are referred to.
