Abstract

1427909 Electrolytically surface-treating aluminium PRODUITS CHIMIQUES UGINE KUHLMANN 1 July 1974 [13 July 1973] 29133/74 Heading C7B Al or an alloy thereof (e.g. with Mg or Mn) is given a patterned surface by electrolytic treatment with 5-50V A.C. in an acid bath (other than sulphuric or chromic acid) containing a 0À1-20g/l of C n F 2n+1 -(CH 2 ) b -SO 3 H or a salt thereof where n is an integer from 4 to 14 and b is 2 or 4. Baths containing HCl or HNO 3 and C 6 H 13 CH 2 CH 2 SO 3 H are exemplified; treatment may be continuous and successive treatments in different baths are possible. Pre-treatments may include degreasing, brightening, glazing or polishing. Aftertreatments may include colourless anodizing (e.g. in H 2 SO 4 ), chemical or electro-chemical colouring (e.g. in a Ni bath to give a black colour), and coating with varnish. The counter-electrode may either be inert e.g. graphite or stainless steel or a second piece of Al (or alloy).
