Abstract
274,882. Appel, R. July 21, 1926, [Convention date]. Chromium, depositing.-The electrolyte consists of chromic acid, or an acidified solution of a chromate, to which is added one or more borates or iodates in amount not exceeding 0.5 gms. per litre. Anodes of sheet lead are employed. Sulphuric acid is preferably used as acidifying agent when a chromate is used as electrolyte, and is also added to chromic acid when not already present therein. In an example the electrolyte consists of a solution containing 5 per cent CrO3 or an equivalent solution of acidified potassium bichro. mate, and about 0.5 gms. per litre or less of sodium pyroborate Na2B4O7, or of sodium or potassium iodate. Electrolysis is carried out at 35-40‹ C., with a voltage 3-4, and current density 0.6 amps per sq. cm. These values may be varied, however, according to the nature of the deposit required; for example, a brownish-black coating is obtained at 10-25‹ C. The correct acidity is ascertained by a preliminary trial; if brown oxides are separated at the cathode, more sulphuric acid is added. Specifications 259,118 and 265,833 are referred to.
