Abstract

576,650. Electrodeposition of nickel. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. June 5, 1944, No. 10799. Convention date, June 12, 1943. [Class 41] Nickel containing from 0.005 to 0.5 per cent. of sulphur is deposited from an acid electrolyte containing a nickel salt and a, compound of sulphur that is reduced to hydrogen sulphide at the cathode. The sulphur compound may be sulphur dioxide in solution or in gaseous form, or a normal or acid sulphite of an alkali metal and it may be added to the purified anolyte before it is passed into the cathode department of a diaphragm cell. The electrolyte may comprise nickel sulphate and chloride, sodium sulphate and boric acid and the compound of sulphur and if the deposited nickel contains from 0.03 to 0.5 per cent. of sulphur it may be used without further treatment as an anode in electrodeposition of nickel but if it contains from 0.005 to 0.03 per cent. of sulphur it may be heated to 1500‹ F. or 1800‹ F. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to render it suitable. A small amount of copper and carbon may also be deposited with the nickel by introducing into the electrolyte a soluble copper salt and acetylene. Specifications 539,882, 553,781 and 569,444 are referred to.
