Abstract
738,516. Electrolytic production of sebacic acid. ROHM & HAAS CO. March 26, 1953 [April 1, 1952], No. 8385/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. A process for electrolytically converting a water-soluble salt of sebacic acid into sebacic acid, comprises passing a direct current through a cell having an anode compartment containing an aqueous solution of the salt, and a cathode compartment containing an aqueous electrolyte, the compartments being separated by a cationic permselective film containing at least 25 per cent by weight of a cation-exchange resin. The salt may be sodium sebacate and the electrolyte may be sodium hydroxide, in which case sodium hydroxide is formed in the cathode compartment with liberation of hydrogen at the cathode, and sebacic acid is precipitated in the anode compartment with liberation of oxygen at the anode. The salt may be one of another alkali metal, such as potassium or lithium, and the electrolyte may be another alkali metal hydroxide such as potassium hydroxide, or a salt such as sodium chloride. The permselective film may be as described in Specification 719,315, and may contain 25 to 75 per cent of a cation exchange resin. Specifications 489,437, 498,251, 515,517, 516,609, 521,207, [all in Group IV], 693,166, 720,002, and U.S.A. Specifications 2,340,111 and 2,366,007 also are referred to.
