Abstract

738,515. Electrolytic production of amines. ROHM & HAAS CO. March 26, 1953 [April 1, 1952], No. 8384/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. A process for converting a water-soluble salt of an amine into the free amine comprises passing a direct current through a cell having a cathode compartment which contains an aqueous solution of the amine salt, and an anode compartment which contains an aqueous electrolyte, the compartments being separated by an anionic permselective membrane containing at least 25 per cent by weight of an anionexchange resin. The amine may be methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, nbutylamine, sec.-butylamine, tert.-butylamine, methylethylamine, di-tert.-butylamine, aniline, methylaniline, di-ethylaniline, pyridine, cyclohexylamine, di-cyclohexylamine, alpha- and #- naphthylamine, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, tetraethylenepentamine, ethanolamine, or dimethylamino ethanol. The salt may be that of an amine with an acid such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, or acetic acid. The electrolyte may be a solution of sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or sodium chloride. When the current is passed free amine accumulates in the cathode compartment, with liberation of hydrogen at the cathode, and, if the amine salt is a salt of sulphuric acid, sulphuric acid accumulates in the anode compartment with liberation of oxygen; if the salt is one of hydrochloric acid, chlorine is liberated at the anode. The permselective membrane may be such as described in Specification 721,161, [Group IV (a)]. Specifications 450,414, 489,173, 556,622, 557,414, [all in Group IV], 654,706, [Group IV (a)], 693,166 and 720,002 also are referred to.
