Abstract
1,150,303. Dimerization of acrylonitrile. MONSANTO CO. 11 July, 1966 [26 July, 1965], No. 31072/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C7] Acrylonitrile is electrohydrodimerized to adiponitrile in an electrolytic cell having a continuously circulated catholyte including an aqueous quaternary ammonium salt solution, acrylonitrile and reaction products, and a continuously circulated anolyte of aqueous sulphuric acid which is intimately contacted with a water insoluble organic solution of an amine having a molecular weight 250-500, e.g. a mixture of the secondary amines N-dodecenyl- or N-lauryl-N-trialkylmethylamine having molecular weights 350-400 dissolved in xylene, benzene or kerosene, to reduce corrosion of the anode, e.g. made of Pb, Pb-Ag, Pb-Sb, Pt or steel. Other examples of amine, including primary and tertiary, are specified. The amount of amine is preferably sufficient to produce a milliequivalency ratio of amine to deleterious ions, e.g. nitrate or (per)chlorate of at most 5À5. The amine loaded with deleterious ions, on separating from the anolyte, can be recharged by contact with NH 3 or NaOH solution. The anolyte and catholyte may be separated by a cation permselective membrane.
