Abstract

Adiponitrile is made electrolytically using acrylonitrile in the presence of a quaternary ammonium compound, or lithium bromide and water. A diaphragm cell may be used with an acid anolyte, e.g. H2SO4, HCl or p-toluene sulphonic acid. Quaternary ammonium compounds specified are tetraethyl ammonium bromide or ethyl sulphate, tetrabutyl-ammonium bromide or iodide. The diaphragm used is cationic permselective, and the catholyte compartment contains the acrylonitrile moistened with 1-3.8% of water, and preferably 6-15% of the quaternary compound or LiBr. Co-solvents, e.g. dimethylformamide, methanol, or isopropanol may be added, and the agitated mixture is maintained at pH below 6, adding a little acid if necessary. Apparatus is described and also methods of recovering adiponitrile from the catholyte product by solvent extraction, adjusting pH value, and distilling.
