Abstract
1,170,436. Preparation of adiponitrile. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 1 Dec., 1966 [3 Dec., 1965; 13 Dec., 1965], No. 53870/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C7] Adiponitrile is obtained by electrolysing an aqueous solution containing acrylonitrile and a quaternary ammonium compound wherein the quaternary ammonium cation is a tetra-alkyl ammonium cation in which the alkyl groups contain 1 or 2 carbon atoms and the anion is a halogen ion or a monoalkylsulphate ion in which the alkyl group has less than three carbon atoms, at a pH below 7, said acrylonitrile being present in a concentration of from 3 to 10% by wt. and said quaternary ammonium compound being present in a concentration of less than 30% by wt. The electrolysis is suitably carried out in a cell divided by a cation exchange membrane to provide separate anode and cathode compartments in which the anolyte employed is an acid. The solution containing the acrylonitrile, which may also include a polymerization inhibitor, is preferably circulated over the cathode.
