Abstract

787,977. Electrodialysis. HOOKER ELECTROCHEMICAL CO. March 12, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 2196/57. Divided out of 787,976. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. A process for decomposing the salts of organic aliphatic acids, e.g. sodium acetate, to produce the acid and base comprises introducing the salt into an intermediate compartment of a multi-compartment electrolytic cell having an anode compartment containing a soluble ionized compound which gives rise to hydrogen ions during electrolysis, e.g. sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid or sodium sulphate, and a cathode compartment containing the cation resulting from electrolysis of the salt, interposing an anionic permselective diaphragm between the anode and intermediate compartments and a permselective diaphragm between the intermediate and cathode compartments, impressing a voltage across the electrodes therein. Specifically, the apparatus is a three-compartment cell with a cationic diaphragm adjacent the cathode as described in Specification 739,722, the salt being introduced into the centre compartment and the acid being formed in the anode compartment. The purpose of the ionized compound is to increase the current density, and products other than oxygen may be formed at the anode, e.g. where the compound is hydrogen chloride, chlorine is formed.
