Abstract
600,182. Electrolysis. GROOMBRIDGE, W. H., and HUNTER, W. March 27, 1942, No. 4061. [Class 41] A process for the production of a lower fatty acid of formula R.COOH, where R is an alkyl group containing up to three carbon atoms, from a metal salt thereof comprises electrolysing an aqueous solution of the salt of at least 5 per cent concentration to produce the acid as well as hydrogen and oxygen, the electrolysis being carried out at an elevated temperature not substantially exceeding 95 C. in a cell adapted to prevent admixture of the electrolyte surrounding the anode with that surrounding the cathode. The temperature is preferably between 80 and 95 C. The anode, preferably of nickel, may be immersed in electrolyte contained in a porous vessel, made, for example, of unglazed porcelain or earthenware, the vessel being immersed in an outer vessel containing the cathode electrolyte. A cover is provided to seal both vessels from each other and from the atmosphere. Suitable unions in the cover provide for the separate removal of hydrogen and oxygen. In the recovery of the acid and base from solutions of sodium acetate, electrolysis should preferably be carried out until for each initial two molecules of sodium acetate the anode electrolyte contains one molecule of titratable acetic acid. The cathode electrolyte can remain in the cell until it consists of a solution of caustic soda only. The removal of the electrolytes and their replacement can be carried out without interruption of the process. Acetic acid can be recovered from the withdrawn anode electrolyte by distillation or by means involving the crystallization and decomposition of acid sodium acetate. To prevent the cathode from being coated with the base in the electrolysis of solutions of salts of bases of low solubility, a porous screen may be interposed. between the cathode and electrolyte, and the space between filled, with an electrolyte free from the base.
