Abstract

787,976. Electrodialysis. HOOKER ELECTROCHEMICAL CO. March 12, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 7329/54. Class 41. A process for electrolytically decomposing the salts of organic aliphatic acids, e.g. sodium acetate or formate, comprises introducing the salt, e.g. as a solution, into a multi-compartment cell 1,. e.g. at 27, which has an anode compartment 2, separated by a cationic permselective diaphragm 5 from an adjacent compartment 3 in which the acid is formed, and at least one permselective diaphragm 25, 29, 30 interposed between the compartment 3 and a cathode compartment 4, the diaphragms 5, 25, 29, 30 being maintained wet with electrolyte and a voltage being impressed across electrodes 7, 9. In the five-compartment cell shown, water is introduced at 16, 17, 32, 19, and carbon dioxide at 32 to react with the sodium cations to produce sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, which is drawn off at 31. Acid is drawn off at 12, and sodium hydroxide at 13, oxygen and hydrogen leaving at 14, 15 respectively. Three-compartment cells are described, in one of which the additional permselective diaphragm is anionic, the sodium acetate solution being introduced into the cathode compartment, and in another of which the additional diaphragm is cationic and the acetate solution is introduced into the central compartment. A four-compartment cell is described in which the arrangement of diaphragms is cationic, anionic, cationic, and the acetate solution is introduced into the compartment adjacent the cathode compartment. Potassium, ammonium, lead and copper salts of numerous specified aliphatic acids may be employed. A current density of 90 amps per square foot is mentioned. In any of the above constructions where two adjacent cationic diaphragms are employed, a substance reactive with one of the products of electrolysis may be introduced into the compartment between the cationic diaphragms. In addition to carbon dioxide, substances mentioned are sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen chloride, phosphoric acid or unspecified organic acids. Specifications 769,103 and 787,977 are referred to.
