Abstract

905,749. Electrolytic cells; alkali chlorates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 29, 1961 [June 22, 1960], No. 21851/60. Addition to 845,043. Class 41. In a multi-cell electrolytic apparatus for the electrolysis of brine, as claimed in the parent Specification, in which a partition sheet of titanium is mounted in each cell with an anode in contact therewith on one face and a cathode element, in the next cell, in contact with the other face, the anode comprises a platinum metal coating on the titanium sheet, and the cathode is the same or may be a steel coating or solely the uncoated titanium and no partitions are used. The cell is adapted for the production of alkali chlorates, current densities of 2 to 4 kA. per sq. metre may be applied. The platinum group metal coating may be formed electrolytically. In a suitable apparatus, a multi-cell 13, contains titanium plates 1 coated on the anode side with platinum, is fed with saturated brine at 70 ‹ C. from a supply vessel 14 by lines 9 to each unit, to produce sodium chlorate and hydrogen. The latter passes out at a line 15, and the electrolyte passes to a heat-exchanger 17 and crystallizer 18 where sodium chlorate crystals are deposited. The depleted electrolyte is partially re-heated in the exchanger 17 and further heated in a heater 20 before returning to the saturating vessel 14. The production of potassium chlorate is also referred to.
