Abstract
1,270,565. Chlor-alkali diaphragm cells. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. Sept.3, 1969 [Sept. 23, 1968], No. 43727/69. Addition to 1, 174, 264. Heading C7B. A chlor-alkali diaphragm cell or (as shown) a group of such cells is operated by feeding a solution of alkali metal chloride, e.g. NaCl, KCl or LiCl, via lines 12-14 to the anode compartment of (a or ) each cell 16, preferably at a rate in excess of that flowing through the diaphragm e.g. of asbestos, chlorinated P. V. C. or polypropylene, to the cathode compartment, withdrawing cell liquor from (the or) each cathode compartment via lines 35-37 to a salt/ caustic regulator 42, to increase the ratio of alkali metal chloride to caustic e.g. to between 0À5 and 2 by adding concentrated alkali metal chloride solution, after feeding part via line 44 to an evaporator for recovery of caustic, and then recycling to (the or) each cathode compartment via lines 48-50. Excess electrolyte withdrawn from (the or) each anode compartment via lines 18-22 and 26 may be replenished with alkali metal chloride in saturator 28 and treated with HCl 34, and then recycled via line 10 back to (the or) each anode compartment. Preferably both the withdrawn anolyte and catholyte liquors are cooled by heat exchangers 32 and 46 prior to recycling.
