Abstract

Citric acid is recovered from the alkali metal citrate obtained in either stage of the process of the parent Specification by passing an aqueous solution of said alkali metal citrate through the second chamber of a four-compartment electrodialysis cell which is formed by successive arrangement of a stainless steel cathode, a permselective cation exchange membrane, an anion exchange membrane, a cation exchange membrane and a graphite anode, the cathode compartment of said cell being filled with substantially 2N alkali metal hydroxide, the neighbouring second chamber containing said citrate solution, the next following chamber being fed with a solution of pure citric acid, and the anode compartment being filled with substantially 1N sulphuric acid, whilst passing a direct current through said cell, whereby the alkali metal ions of said citrate solution pass the first mentioned cation exchange membrane to form alkali metal hydroxide at the cathode and the citrate anions pass the anion exchange membrane to raise the concentration of citric acid in its compartment from which it is drawn off as the product of the method.
