Abstract

738,519. Electrolytic production of ammonium hydroxide and sulphuric acid. ROHM & HAAS CO. April 9, 1953 [April 25, 1952], No. 9645/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. A process for electrolytically converting ammonium sulphate into ammonium hydroxide and sulphuric acid comprises passing a direct current through cell having a cathode compartment containing an aqueous solution of ammonium sulphate and an anode compartment containing an aqueous electrolyte, said compartments being separated by an anionic permselective film which contains at least 25 per cent by weight of an anion-exchange resin. The film may consist of polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, or natural or synthetic rubber, in which is incorporated 25 to 75 per cent of an anion-exchange resin, as described in Specification 721,161, [Group IV (a)]. The electrolyte in the anode compartment may be an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid or sodium chloride. Sulphuric acid is formed in the anode compartment, oxygen being liberated at the anode, and ammonium hydroxide is formed in the cathode compartment while hydrogen is liberated at the cathode, any ammonia carried out with the hydrogen being recovered by a solid carbon dioxide trap. The process may be made continuous by flowing a solution of ammonium sulphate through the cathode compartment. Specifications 450,309, 489,173, 556,622, 557,414, 654,706, [all in Group IV], 693,166 and 720,002 also are referred to.
