Abstract
In a process for recovering metals which have an electrochemical potential from that of H to and including that of Mn and which form water soluble sulphates, an aqueous solution of the metal sulphate is electrolysed using as anode a box plate of the type used in the manufacture of acid storage batteries containing Pb powder, this electrode being able to take part reversibly in the sulphate-forming anodic process so that PbSO4 formed at the anode can be electrolytically converted to H2SO4. Examples are the recovery of (1) Ni, (2) Fe, (3) Fe/Cd/Ni and (4) Mn. The pH of the electrolyte for electrolysis of sulphates of the elements in the stated range is critical and the Pb anode acts to keep the pH constant. If the solution becomes too acid PbSO4 is formed and if too alkaline Pb(OH)2 is formed. The solubility product of Pb(OH)2 is considerably lower than that of PbSO4 therefore the pH value can be controlled by the current density. After deposition of the metals the Pb electrode containing PbSO4 is connected as cathode and Pb is regenerated and H2SO4 recovered. The Pb powder of the anode may be mixed with BaSo4 powder to reduce agglomeration of the granules and may be enclosed in a textile shielding lining of glass and nylon fibres. In producing Ni, and optionally in producing the other metals in the stated range, the metal sulphate electrolyte also contains a sulphate of one or more other metals forming water soluble hydroxides and having an electrode potential greater than and of the same charge as that of the metal to be deposited, e.g. Na2SO4. Electrolytic recovery of the H2SO4 may be by arranging the Pb electrode, which may comprise Pb powder between perforated Pb foils, so as to act as a diaphragm, the electrode dividing a cell into two separate parts, metal sulphate being in one part and Pb powder and H2SO4 being regenerated in the other. The metal sulphate solution and H2SO4 may be separated by a microporous polyvinyl chloride diaphragm.
