859,723. Electrolytic manganese dioxide. CARTOUCHERIE FRANCAISE. July 14, 1959 [July 28, 1958], No. 24230/59. Class 41 In the process of producing manganese dioxide electrolytically in which pyrolusite is in contact with a lead cathode, the cathode carries troughs which contain the pyrolusite, and the current is adjusted to avoid electrolytic action with the bare lead spaces between the troughs. Preferably the troughs are formed of thin lead sheet 3, Fig. 1, attached to vertical strips of lead 2. The anode 1 may also be of lead, and the electrolyte is manganese sulphate solution. The face of the open troughs may be protected by an ion permeable screen to form a closed casing to hold the pyrolusite. In operation, the voltage drop across the cell is gradually decreased until no free hydrogen is evolved at the metal surfaces of the cathode, and the current consumption is thereby limited to the reduction of the pyrolusite.
