Abstract

1321884 Electrolytic production of sulphur hexafluoride ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 2 July 1970 [3 July 1969] 32104/70 Heading C7B Sulphur hexafluoride is produced electrolytically using a carbonaceous anode and a molten electrolyte comprising a mixture of potassium fluoride and hydrogen fluoride KF. n HF where n = 0À9 - 3À0, in the presence of elemental sulphur in the vicinity of the anode. The bath may also contain lithium fluoride, aluminium fluoride, nickel fluoride or sodium fluoride. The cell may comprise a cylindrical iron vessel, which forms the cathode, provided with a lid supporting an amorphous carbon anode. Inert gas may be passed through the cell to effect withdrawal of the sulphur hexafluoride produced.
