Abstract
1327974 Zirconium refining EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 6 Dec 1971 [7 Dec 1970] 56555/71 Heading C7B In a method of producing zirconium or its alloys using an anode of zirconium or zirconium carbide a cathode is continuously conveyed through an electrolytic cell comprising a mixture of molten salts containing a zirconium compound. The cathode may comprise a moving strip of zirconium or other metal or a series of plates carried through the cell on a chain or strip. The cathode is continuously melted on leaving the electrolyte by a plasma torch or by high frequency melting. The molten metal drops on to a rotating disc and balls of metal are thrown into a quenching bath of LiI-KI. The cell, which is made of steel, may comprise two anode compartments and a central cathode compartment separated by diaphragms of porous metal or graphite. The electrolyte may be a mixture of zirconium iodide and alkali metal iodides such as lithium iodide and potassium iodide. The cell atmosphere is argon. The cell is heated by A.C. current flowing between auxilliary electrodes.
