Abstract
1345102 Electrolytic reduction of sulphides CYPRUS METALLURGICAL PROCESSES CORP 27 Jan 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 3791/72 Heading C7B In an electrolytic process for the dissociation of metals from their sulphides and mixed sulphides, the electrolyte may be an acidic aqueous solution of at least one chloride of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal mixed with the solid feed sulphide of the metal to be dissociated of particle size smaller than 60 mesh U.S., the temperature being 60‹C-105‹C, the pH being below 3À9 and the anode current density being above 12 Amp/sq. ft. The metals may be antimony, arsenic, bismuth, cadmium, cobalt, copper, gold, lead, nickel, selenium, silver and zinc. The specific resistivity of the sulphides is at least 1 x 10<SP>-5</SP> ohm-cm. The alkali metal chloride may be sodium chloride or potassium chloride and the alkaline earth metal chloride may be calcium or barium chloride. The elemental sulphur formed in the electrolysis may be recovered. Suitable apparatus comprises a graphite anode, stainless steel cathode, a heater and an agitator to keep the sulphides in suspension. The anode and cathode may be separated by a plastics cloth diaphragm.
