Abstract

1427228 Electro-winning of metals CYPRUS METALLURGICAL PROCESSES CORP 14 June 1973 28253/73 Heading C7B Metal, e.g. Cu, Ni, Ag, Zn, Cd, Hg or Pb is recovered from the metal sulphide by leaching the metal sulphide using a solution containing ferric ions, e.g. as ferric chloride, to form a solution containing ions of the metal to be recovered, and ferrous ions but substantially no ferric ions, and by passing the solution so formed to the cathode compartment of a divided cell and electrolyzing the solution to deposit the metal to be recovered at the cathode whilst continuously flowing the catholyte through the diaphragm, thereby preventing ferric ions formed at the anode from contacting the cathode, and removing anolyte from the anode component of the cell. Electrolysis may be preceded by separating the sulphur produced by leaching from the leach solution. The cathode used is preferably formed of the metal to be recovered; and the anode may be of graphite or of precious metal oxide-coated titanium. The diaphragm may be of woven polypropylene cloth.
