Abstract

1362943 Electrolytic recovery of metals CYPRUS METALLURGICAL PROCESSES CORP 2 Feb 1973 [21 April 1972] 5225/73 Heading C7B Metals particularly of Groups IB, IIB, IVA, VA, VIA and VIII of the Periodic Table, e.g. Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, Sb, Se, Fe, Ni or Co, are recovered from their sulphides and/or mixed sulphides by electrolysis of an aqueous acidic (pH below 3À9) solution of at least one metal halide e.g. Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn or rare earth metal halide (Cl, Br, I or F) of concentration 0À5 N to saturation at between 50 and 105‹C, mixed with the particulate metal sulphide, preferably of particle size smaller than 60 US standard mesh, to dissociate at least some of it into metal ions and elemental sulphur. The metal may be recovered by electro-deposition on the cathode e.g. of steel, Cu, Pb or Al; the anode may be of graphite or coated Ti. A diaphragm cell may be used with anode current density above 12 ASF. FeCl 2 is preferred with chalcopyrite, marmatite or pyrrhotite ores; AlCl 3 with galena ores or Pb-Zn or Pb-Ag concentrates; and ZnCl 2 with Zn ores. The pH may be maintained with HCl. An alkali or alkaline earth metal chloride may be added to the solution.
