Abstract

An electrolytic procedure for the dissociation of metals from their sulfides and mixed sulfides, characterized in that the electrolyte comprises an acidic aqueous solution of at least one soluble inorganic metal halide salt and mixtures thereof, but does not include a chloride of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chloride, the solution having a concentration of between about 0.5 N and the saturation concentration; a particulate solid feed sulfide of the metal to be dissociated is mixed with the electrolyte; the temperature of the medium thus formed is maintained between approximately 50ºC and 105ºC; and the pH of said medium is kept below about 3.9 while an electric current is introduced into the electrolyte to dissociate at least a part of the metal sulfide into metal ions and elemental sulfur.
