Abstract
515,648. Electrolyte surface, treatment of magnesium. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd. (I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.- GES.). June 23, 1938, No. 18652. [Class 41] Magnesium and magnesium base alloys are provided with a protective coating by treatment as the negative electrode of a galvanic cell the positive electrode of which, preferably of steel is directly connected to it by a conductor. The electrolyte preferably consists of a solution of a chromate, dichromate or chromic acid together with a smaller proportion of a phosphate permanganate, borate, cyanate, sulphate, sulphite, selenate, selenite, tungstate, vanadate or molybdate, the latter salts preferably being of an alkali metal, magnesium or manganese. The pH value should be 3.7-7, preferable values being 4.5-6 for hard dense coatings and 3.8-3.9 for soft, porous coatings. The coated articles may be afterwards immersed in a 5 per cent. solution of water-glass at 70-80‹ C.
