Abstract

1439933 Anodizing aluminium alloys J M KAPE 15 Aug 1973 [23 May 1972] 24094/72 Heading C7B Aluminium alloys are anodized using A.C. current at a temperature of -5‹C to 30‹C using as electrolyte an aqueous solution comprising 4-40 wt per cent of sulphuric acid and a substance which will react with sulphur formed during anodizing; the substance being ferric salt to provide 0.1 gm ion/litre to saturation; nickel, cobalt, vanadium, chromium, manganese or cerium sulphate to provide the metal in a proportion of 0.1 gm ion/litre to saturation; or a chromate, vanadate, molybdate or permanganate to provide those ions in a range 0.1 gm ion/litre to saturation. Various examples of suitable sulphur combining substances are given. The anodizing may be carried out as a batch or continuous process. The alloys may be etched in NaOH before anodizing; and the coatings may be sealed in Ni acetate or itaconate or in boiling water.
