Abstract

1402184 Anodic treatment of Cr alloys INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 16 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 17941/72 Heading C7B A chromium containing alloy is coloured by immersion as the anode in an aqueous solution of H 2 SO 4 with chromic acid, or a chromate or a dichromate. The D.C. current may be interrupted when the anode potential with respect to a reference electrode reaches a predetermined value corresponding to a film of given colour. Alternatively the anode potential may be set at this value and the current allowed to fall to zero. The alloy may be stainless steel or chromium alloys based on Fe, Co, or N: The solution may also contain manganous sulphate. The cathode may be lead or platinum. The reference electrode may be calomel or an inert metal or alloy. The film may be subsequently hardened by cathodic polarization.
