Abstract

1331365 Colouring anodized aluminium and alloys thereof SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [18 March 1970] 24469/71 Heading C7B A method for colouring anodic oxide films on articles of aluminium or alloys thereof comprises direct current electrolysis using such an article as the cathode in a bath of electrolyte which is an aqueous solution of at least one acid or salt containing at least one metal ion of, for example, Ag, As, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn, Ti, V or Zn. Suitable electrolytes comprise at least one of boric, chromic and selenic acids; cadmium, cobalt, lead, nickel and zinc acetates; ammonium, nickel and stannouschlorides; chromic and silver nitrates; and chromic, cobalt, cupric, ferrous, magnesium, manganese and nickel sulphates. The article which may be a sheet, plate, extrusion or casting is pretreated with NaOH, anodized using an electrolyte comprising H 2 SO 4 to which naphthalenedisulphonic acid may be added, and after the colouring process is sealed conventionally. The oxide film is not changed in thickness during the colouring process and may be toughened. Its eventual colour depends upon the electrolyte used and the conditions of electrolysis and may for example be black, brown, green, yellow or white.
