Abstract

1411999 Electro-depositing aluminium, cadmium, indium or zinc SIEMENS AG 27 Oct 1972 [28 Oct 1971] 49771/72 Heading C7B [ Also in Division B3] A metallic workpiece, e.g. wire, strip or sheet of Fe, Al, Be, Mg, Zn, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W or Re, is deformed by electrodepositing a deformation-facilitating surface layer of pure Al, Cd, In or Zn on the workpiece in an oxygen-free anhydrous aprotic organo-metallic electrolyte, then deforming, e.g. by (deep) drawing, extrusion, pressing, stamping, swaging, punching, spinning, chasing, rolling or explosion, without applying auxiliary deformation-facilitating material, such as soaps, oils, lubricants, to the layer. The workpiece may be treated in an anhydrous inert aprotic liquid prior to electro-deposition. Prior to electrodeposition, the workpiece may be pre-coated e.g. with Cu or Ni to make soldering or brazing possible. After electro-deposition the workpiece may be heated prior to deformation. After deformation the surface layer may be pressure blasted with corundum, SiC or glass beads; anodized and dyed or chemically oxidized e.g. in CrO 3 electrocoated or dissolved; or coated with plastic materials e.g. paints or varnishes. Besides brazing/ soldering, Cd may be Cr (plated). Ultrasonic welding may be applied to an Al surface. Electrolytes specified are: (1) [(CH 3 ) 3 (C 6 H 5 CH 2 )N]Cl 2.2Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 . 4 toluene; (2) NaF.2.0Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 . 3.5 toluene; (3) [(CH 3 ) 3 (C 6 H 5 CH 2 )N] F.2.2Zn (C 2 H 5 ) 2 . 2.5 toluene; (4) [(C 2 H 5 ) 4 N] Cl.2.2Zn (C 2 H 5 ) 2 . 3.0 toluene; (5) [(CH 3 ) 4 N)C1.2.2Zn (C 2 H 5 ) 2 . 4.0 benzene.
